“Pic of the Week”, August 4, 2017: Amphicars, Florida
You might recognize these cars from the movies, like Inspector Clouseau, but if you want a chance to see and ride one you’ll need to head to Florida’s Disney World, where I spotted this bunch. I’d never seen an Amphicar before and it was fun watching them drive in, around, and out of a large lagoon.
Amphicars were the first mass-produced vehicles to be driveable both on land and water. The car was designed by Hanns Trippel and production began in Germany in 1961. The Amphicar’s 4 cylinder engine was mounted at the rear of the craft, driving the rear wheels. Classic Steel — a visit to the Rolling Sculpture Car Show, Canmore
Happy Canada Day, eh? Today is Canada’s 150th birthday and across the country people are celebrating in a big way. It’s not everyday a country reaches that age and there is good reason to celebrate, because Canada is a great place to live! There’s a “suggestion” from the Canadian government that a certain percentage of media be “Canadian Content”, so here is our piece of Canadian content for today.
I wonder if there is anything more Canadian than spending a pleasant summer day enjoying classic cars with the beautiful Alberta Rocky Mountains as a backdrop? Probably so, but those things likely would be a lot less fun.

Great Cars along the Highway….Torres del Paine, Chile
Came across this rather unusual van parked in the shadows of the granite spires of Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile. The park is an amazingly beautiful place and the van definitely seemed a little out of place.
Wicked is a company that rents uniquely decorated minivans to function as transportation and sleeping accommodations for tourists. A little cramped for me but I can see it being popular with a lot of travelers. Certainly it was memorable and therein lays an important lesson in advertising.

“Pic of the Week”, March 24, 2017: Cars and Gals
A scene that seems like it might have been snapped a half century ago — two pretty girls sitting on the hood of a classic car. Of course, it’s not. I think the give-away are the tattoos; I see at least three of them (plus there’s a cell phone on the ground, too). Back in the 1950s “nice” girls just didn’t get tattooed. That was something “trashy” people did. My, how we’ve changed…..

Vintage & Classic Royal Car Collection, Udaipur
Lovely Udaipur, the City of Lakes, is said to be one of the romantic destinations in the world. The city has long been under the rule of a royal family, the House of Mewar, the world’s longest serving dynasty. Visiting the City Palace, historic home of the family (and where they still live) is a highlight of a visit to Udaipur. If, like me, you enjoy classic cars, a chance to see the Royal car collection is an opportunity not to be missed.
After finishing with our visit to and lunch at the City Palace, several of us headed to the Vintage and Classic Car Collection which opened to the public in 2000. All the vehicles on display — just under two dozen …

Great Cars along the Road…. Butte, Montana
Butte, Montana, is a colorful town. It was in its heyday about a century ago, and I would have loved to have visited it during that time. Butte (pronounced B-yut) was one of the largest and most advanced cities in the western United States.

As the mines around Butte have progressively (but not completely) played out and closed, the town has lost lots of its people and much of its luster. Still, while somewhat worn, it has charm. As we drove around the streets, I found this beautiful classic car parked in front of buildings that were old when it was new. Believe it’s a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. Great Cars along the Highway…. Winnipeg
A beautiful classic car spotted while visiting my dad in Winnipeg. It was parked in the lot of a shopping mall — well removed from all other vehicles (wisely so, I think). One of my classic cars, a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air. Obviously lovingly maintained. I didn’t get to talk to the owner, but I think the photos tell their own story.

Gasoline Alley, Calgary: The Cars and Trucks
Besides its extensive collection of antique gasoline pumps and signs, Calgary’s Gasoline Alley museum has a fascinating assortment of cars and trucks! Many of these are unique, at least in my experience, as they were mostly collected from vehicles driven in Alberta. As such, you’ll see more trucks than at most car museums because trucks were (and still are) very important to Alberta’s economy.
What follows are several galleries of photos of my favorite vehicles in Gasoline Alley’s collection — far from everything! For the sake of organization and no other reason, I’ve divided them by year of manufacturing, the oldest first with newer vehicles to follow.
