Great Cars along the Highway. Pearl Street, Boulder, Colorado

00 Spotted on the Road, Pearl Street

Pearl Street is the heart of downtown Boulder.  Much of this street is a pedestrian zone, with lots of shops, restaurants and buskers.  It’s a lively place in the evening, filled with people, conversation and music.

During our last visit to Boulder, we wandered to Pearl Street and found one of the most unusual car displays I’ve ever seen.  One vehicle in particular was a tribute to rock and (*I think*) especially to Freddie Mercury of Queen fame (one of my favorite voices in popular music).  Someone had spent hundreds and hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars glitzing up a ‘rock ‘n roll’ car in tribute.

Great Cars Along the Highway: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

01 Moose Jaw

One of the more unusual vehicles I’ve seen in years was this Mazda SUV, spotted in the parking lot of a hotel I was staying at in Saskatchewan, while traveling between Winnipeg and Calgary this summer.

The vehicle itself is a generic SUV, but the paint job captivated me.  The vehicle belonged to an Army Medic and pays tribute to some of those in the Canadian military who have lost their lives in Afghanistan.  A rather nice touch and moving tribute to these fallen comrades, and something unusual for Canada.

I think the photographs are self-explanatory.

“Pic of the Week”, March 1, 2019: James Bond’s Aston Martin

00 Bond car

Sitting adjacent to the Burj Khalifa gift shop in Dubai was a most beautiful car.  If it looks familiar it’s because it was used in the Bond movie, Spectre.  The car is an Aston Martin DB10, a 2 door concept car created especially for the movie by the British Car manufacturer.  A total of 10 cars was made — 8 used in the movie, 2 used for promotional purposes.  I assume this is one of the latter.

Some of the car’s technical specifics:  4.7 liter AJ37 V8 engine producing 430 bhp.  Accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds.  6 speed manual transmission.  Top speed 310 km/h (193/h).

A rare and very beautiful machine.  And …

Toys for Boys! The Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy Collection

12 Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy Collection Jaguar XK 140 1956

As with all good museums of its type, a visit to the Cotswold Motoring Museum is like stepping back in time.  Located in one of the most beautiful parts of England, in the town of Bourton-on-the-Water, the museum is housed in a building that once functioned as a mill.

A modest admission fee lets you explore the many features inside (see link above for details).  There is an assortment of interesting vintage cars, caravans and motorcycles dating from the early 20th century through the 1970s.  You can see the museum at your leisure as you walk from one gallery to the next.  Most of the vehicles are of English vintage, but not all are.  Lining the walls …

Great Cars Along the Highway: Ford Sunliner, Spokane

P1070341

Came across this lovely old car parked in a shopping mall in Spokane.

It’s a Ford from the early 1950s that seems to have been reworked somewhat, especially its grill, making it a little hard to pinpoint.  I expect a 1952 or 1953 vintage, but a lovely classic  convertible.  I found it interesting that it has its old dealer plaque, Stoddard-Wendle.  Wendle is still a popular Ford dealership in the city.

Great Cars Along the Highway: 1959 Meteor Montcalm

00-Show and Shine Car Show (110)

A lovely 2 door hardtop beauty that is approaching 60 years of age! The Meteor  was a Ford model that was built and sold only in Canada.

In the mid-1950s, Ford thought that to compete with General Motors (eg. with its Buick and Oldsmobile brands), it had to develop similar unique products. The plan affected Mercury by calling for the marque’s completely new platform and body design to differentiate it from Fords, beginning with the 1957 model year.

Eventually a 1960s trade agreement brought the US and Canadian auto manufacturing industry into alignment for cross-border production and trade. These unique Canadian models were axed.

Cruise Night, Carson City

IMG_1257

I spotted this collection of classic cars while recently visiting the Reno area. We were driving down the main road in Carson City (S. Carson St) when we saw dozens of beautiful cars in this lot and, of course, had to turn off and see what was going on.

Turns out this was the weekly Cruise Night gathering of a local car club. I’d long known that the favorable climate of Nevada helped prevent the deterioration of cars and that certainly was on display.

There were lots of beautiful cars and many people stopped to study and enjoy them. Here’s a part of what we saw that day:

Great Cars Along the Highway. Colombo, Sri Lanka

IMG_9186

One of the rarest cars I ever countered during my travels to Sri Lanka, in fact, the only one of its type I’ve seen in the country, is this classic Cadillac coupe.  Parked in front of the Galle Face Hotel, it was decorated for one of the many weddings held here.

It’s obviously a Cadillac, and appears to be a Coupe de Ville from the mid 1950s with some post purchase customizations.  Anyone know anything more about this car?
