“Pic of the Week”, August 2, 2019: Saskatchewan Sunset
When I was driving across Saskatchewan last summer, I saw darkening clouds on the distant horizon which got progressively closer with each passing mile. It was dusk, and I thought the light of the setting sun quite lovely against the storm clouds. I stopped several times and snapped some photos along the drive.
Fortunately it stayed dry into the early night, until I’d checked into my hotel. After that, the heavens opened for quite a downpour.

“Pic of the Week”, December 8, 2017: Bagpipes at Sunset, Colombo
I’ve taken more time to relax and watch the entirety of a sunset over the Indian Ocean than anywhere else; the majority of these were at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. And I’m not alone. Usually 50 — at times upwards of a hundred — guests are there alongside me enjoying it as well.
During my visit to Colombo this year I discovered the hotel had added a new twist to the sunset ritual. A Sri Lankan bag-piper playing a dirge, together with one of the hotel employees, solemnly and slowly march out to the edge of the sea at dusk. Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park (The Place of Refuge), Big Island of Hawaii
Perhaps the best place on the Big Island to enjoy a sunset (from many great possibilities), Pu’uhonua o Honaunau (the Place of Refuge) is a remarkable destination. This is a National Historic site which should be near the top of things NOT to be missed by anyone visiting the Big Island.
The Pu’uhonua o Honaunau was built by the Hawaiian people as a sanctuary and place of safety. Any commoner one who had broken one of the many laws (known as kapu) of their society could try to go here to be safe (although people would be trying to stop them as they tried to get to the place of refuge). No blood could be shed or people arrested …

Nowhere is a Place: Visiting Patagonia, 1) El Calafate, Argentina
While they look extraterrestrial, those aren’t flying saucers or wormholes in the sky; rather, they’re some of the most unusual cloud formations I’ve ever seen. The above image (and more in the photos below) was captured at dusk my first night in Patagonia and it affirmed my desire to visit this corner of the world. It had taken 20 years, but I finally made it! The breath-taking and sometimes surreal and barren landscapes of Patagonia are unlike any other!

“Pic of the Week”, September 12, 2014: Sunset, Pismo Beach, California
One of my favorite stretches of the California coast is that around San Luis Obispo. Thirty years ago this was relatively undeveloped, but that’s much less true today.
This week’s photo is of a sunset in Pismo Beach. It was a lovely fall evening. We were just checking in to our hotel when I stepped out on the balcony and took in this beautiful view. Fortunately I had my camera at hand and got a decent photo of it.

“Pic of the Week”, August 8, 2014: African Buffalo, Sandibe concession, Botswana
One of the most memorable half hours I’ve ever spent on safari was watching this herd of buffalo cross the Okavango Delta. It was just before sunset and the light was soft and magical, what John Steinbeck liked to call, “the hour of the pearl”. We approached the buffalo herd downwind so they couldn’t pick up our scent, but they were aware of our presence. The larger, stronger animals came to the front of the herd and made a living wall between us and the smaller and weaker buffalo. There they stood, trying to see us (they have bad vision) and smell us, and we sat back taking it all in, enjoying this magnificent spectacle of nature!

“Pic of the Week”. March 21, 2014: Sunset over Courtney, British Columbia
Situated on the “Sunshine coast” of Eastern Vancouver Island, just off Canada’s west Coast, Courtney is a small town in a lovely setting.
I was visiting my aunt and cousin, who live here. As is my habit, I like to get out and explore, so we drove around at dusk. I could tell we were going to have a nice sunset so we gained a vantage point and enjoyed its tranquil beauty. It was a nice way to spend a some time with a dear relative.

“Pic of the Week”. March 14, 2014: Patagonian sunset, El Calafate, Argentina
One of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen was during our first night in Patagonia. We were staying in the small town of El Calafate in Argentina, walking back to our hotel after dinner. The clouds were dramatic and I hoped the setting sun would cooperate with some nice light….which it certainly did!
Besides the brilliant colors, what I found most amazing was the spiral shape of the clouds that for all purposes looked like flying saucers. It was almost surreal and certainly a nice introduction to some of the beauty we were to see in Patagonia.
