00 Sri Pathrakali Amman Temple

Trincomalee is best known for its beautiful natural harbor and spectacular diving.  But there are some diversions in the town that are worth stopping to see.

A Visit to the Koneswaram Temple, Trincomalee

00 Koneswaram Temple

For most of the late 20th century, Trincomalee was at the heart of Sri Lanka’s long, bloody Civil War.  As you would expect, visitation to the area was limited and I’ve only been to the city once, this during my last visit to Ceylon.  It’s one of the nicer communities in the country and has a beautiful setting along the Indian Ocean.

I made a point of visiting the Trincomalee British War Cemetery (a.k.a. Trincomalee War Cemetery) situated on the north end of the …

Christianity is one of the smaller religions in Sri Lanka, the most common being Buddhism.  But there is a strong Christian community especially in the eastern part of the country.  On Good Friday (the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and death) we visited St. Mary’s Cathedral in Trincomalee.  The church was very crowded and busy, with a large line of people waiting to get to the front of the church.  Their goal was to see …
