a.k.a. Photo of the Week

“Pic of the Week”, March 12, 2021: A Produce Shop in Brera

01 Fruit Market Brera neighborhood (2)

While exploring the Brera neighborhood of Milan, my wife and I came across this rather nice fruit/produce shop.
While not a farmer’s market, I was impressed with the freshness and high quality of the produce, and how attractively it was displayed.

“Pic of the Week”, March 5, 2021: Stockholm’s Concert Hall.

03 Royal Concert Hall (1)

The Stockholm Concert Hall (Konserthuset) was constructed to be the home of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, opening in 1926.  It’s situated on Hötorget (adjoining the Hay Market).
The neoclassical design of the blue building was by Ivar Tengbom and it’s built in the style of a Greek temple.  The Concert Hall is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Stockholm.  Guided tours of the interior are available wherein you can enjoy its grand staircases and crystal chandeliers.
In addition to hosting more than 200 orchestra concerts each year, the Concert Hall is also home to the annual Nobel Prize Award Ceremony every December 10th, which is attended by the Swedish Royal family, Nobel Laureates and their guests.  The …

“Pic of the Week”, February 26, 2021: A Parade in Jojawar

04 Parade

Our entry into the city of Jojawar was delayed by a traffic jam.  When we got out of our vehicle to see the reason why, we encountered this parade on the city’s main street.
I never did find out what the reason for this gathering was — perhaps a Jain celebration?  But the colors, music, chanting and enthusiasm of the celebration were engaging and evident.
Within 10 minutes it was over and we resumed our journey to our hotel.   But I did gain an appreciation for how people in India love to celebrate.

“Pic of the Week”, February 19, 2021: Education is the new Buffalo, Calgary

00 Downtown Calgary Library (29)

I was intrigued by this work of art, created by Lionel Peyachew, which is prominently displayed in Calgary’s new Central Library.
Historically the key to survival on the prairies was a successful buffalo hunt.  Today the key to success is a good education.  Peyachew has used welded steel letters and numbers to construct a an icon that combines past and present tools for survival.

Spent a pleasant late summer day wandering Tivoli Gardens in downtown Copenhagen.  Within this historic family park we came across this cluster of interesting bird houses.

“Pic of the Week”, February 5, 2021: Gargoyles of Wawel Hill, Krakow

Gargoyles of Wawel Hill 01

Gargoyles are designed to move water away from the side of a building.  Often they are carved of stone and can be found on old cathedrals.  I found these metal gargoyles in Krakow to be quite interesting.
When we visited Wawel Hill, we were impressed by the large variety of gargoyles around the complex.  All were made of crafted metal.  Several of them seemed shaped like dragons, some even having crowns on their head; others looked like monstrous birds. Quite interesting decorations, even when viewed by silhouette.

“Pic of the Week”, January 29, 2021: The Masala Chai Men’s Club, Jojawar

00 Masala Chai

While rambling around the city of Jojawar, we came across this group of older men.  They were gathered in the shade of an overhang, shoes off, sitting on towels and blankets, smoking and enjoying good conversation and some masala chai.
As is typical of the more remote regions of Rajasthan, the men almost uniformly wore turbans.
A street vendor near them was cooking up masala chai, a treat our tour group had grown to enjoy.  We watched him go through the process of preparing our chai — a mixture of boiled milk, water and spiced tea.   He kept constantly stirring the mixture until it was ready.

“Pic of the Week”, January 22, 2021: Long’s Peak, Colorado

00 McIntosh Lake (1)

Long’s Peak is a prominent mountain in the Front Range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. A “fourteener” (14,259-feet or 4346 m tall), it is the highest point in Boulder County and Rocky Mountain National Park.  It rises 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above the Great Plains.
Long’s Peak can be prominently seen from Longmont, Colorado,   These photos were taken from the trail around McIntosh Lake, which my wife and I walked with my son and daughter-in-law during a visit this past year.  The views of Long’s Peak are lovely!
