Dry Falls – Home of The World’s Largest Waterfall!

dry-falls-2010-intro-001

Imagine a waterfall with a precipice over three and a half miles long and a drop of over 400 feet!  (By comparison, Niagara Falls is about 1/10th as wide).  Imagine millions of gallons of water pouring over it each second, draining the flooded plains of central Washington State.  When you gaze at the geologic skeleton of this event, try to envision what it was like here 10-15,000 years ago as snow and ice from the last great Ice Age began melting and shaping the landscape.

I’ve always had a general interest in science and find the geology of Dry Falls State Park to be fascinating.  To understand what you now see in this park a short review …

Weekend escape to Portland!

Weekend escape to Portland!

Portland, Oregon, is one of our favorite destinations for a weekend getaway.  It is not a large city, but big enough for our tastes and is beautiful and vibrant.

Portland has a highly functional Metro, and its easy and cheap (just over $2) to get into the heart of the city directly from PDX airport.  The airport is modern and very functional, and highlights Oregon’s fine restaurants and shops; if you have to linger here for a few hours you can easily spend the time windowshopping or enjoying a coffee and pastry.

There are a great assortment of accomodations in the city, including a variety of quaint older hotels.  In Portland we generally stay at the downtown Marriott, which we prefer because of its central location, access to the …

Stevens Lake — A Hidden Gem in the Bitterroots

Stevens Lake — A Hidden Gem in the Bitterroots

I love the sight of a sub-alpine lake set in a beautiful mountain range about as much as anything!.  In this regard, Stevens Lake certainly does not disappoint.  Its a great destination for a day hike or a weekend backpacking trip.

When Northwesterners talk about “Stevens Lake” we’re actually talking about two adjoining lakes (Upper and Lower Stevens Lake).  These are located in the Idaho Panhandle just this side of the Montana border, not far from Lookout Pass, close to Mullan.  The trail head is close to I-90 and located around 4000′ above sea level.

The trail works itself through a fairly steep forested hill before opening onto a fairly flat and pretty meadow.   At the far south …

A springtime hike on the Yakima Rim Skyline Trail

A springtime hike on the Yakima Rim Skyline Trail

After a rather long winter in Spokane, I was ready for a pleasant hike. While in my heart I’d rather head up to the mountains for a stroll in an alpine meadow, there’s way too much snow up there in April. Fortunately in Washington state we have some good springtime hiking options, mostly in the central state in the deserts around the Columbia River. In the summer these places tend to be too hot and in winter they, too, can be covered in snow. Spring and fall are the best time to try these trails.

I’d read about the Yakima Rim Skyline Trail years ago in Harvey Manning‘s classic book, the …

Wild Horses Monument & Gingko Petrified Forest

Wild Horses Monument & Gingko Petrified Forest

The Columbia River is one of the most interesting and beautiful geographic features of the Inland Northwest, from its headwaters in British Columbia to the dramatic Gorge just east of Portland.    When you look at the river remember, as I do, that this was a major portion of the road Lewis and Clark took to the Pacific under President Jefferson’s sponsorship.  While it lacks the dramatic forest of the coast, the Columbia River Gorge in Central Washington is still an impressive place to visit — or at least to stop on your journey east from Seattle.  There are two locations on either bank that I’d driven by on I-90 dozens of times, traveling between the coast and my home in Spokane.  I’d seen signs …

Crater Lake — The Most Beautiful In The World?

Crater Lake — The Most Beautiful In The World

The phrase “most beautiful in the world” is batted about with relative ease.  I’ve heard it used to describe dogs, cats, flowers, homely children and assorted celebrities.  Always it denotes something special to the observer but sadly only to that observer.  When referring to Crater Lake, however, the phrase “most beautiful lake in the world” may indeed be accurate.  It is a striking deep blue lake  — “The Jewel of the Cascades” — placed in an improbable location, near the top of an volcanic crater.

Crater Lake National Park is located in South Central Oregon.  Some might say it’s in the middle of nowhere but I found the drive along the Rogue River to the park to be beautiful.  The park is fairly …
