“Pic of the Week”. April 12, 2013. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

2013-015

Of the many photos I’ve taken in my life, this remains one of my favorites!  We were visiting the Grand Canyon for a few days, part of a loop trip through the American Southwest that included Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches, Bryce and Zion National Parks.  The scenery everywhere was truly spectacular, almost otherworldly!

I think if there’s one place in the United States every visitor should see, that’s the Grand Canyon (or maybe Yosemite?  or Glacier?…. so very hard to choose).   You can’t appreciate the incredible size and scale of the Grand Canyon until you’ve see it with your own eyes.  Photos don’t do it justice but can give you an idea of the beautiful eroded formations and colors of the place.

Set against that grand backdrop are two of my favorite people, my lovely and beloved wife, Sylvia, snapping a photo of our oldest son, Bryan.  It looks like they’re right at the canyon’s edge but they’re actually a good 10 meters from it, the edge sloping away and not visible in the photo.  Bryan was 2 years old at that time and so incredibly cute with his Big Bird backpack (he had to carry a water bottle and toy camera in it, like daddy did).   Today Bryan is a computer science major in college…..my, how the time flies by!

Karl, that brings back great memories for us too. We just had to see sunset and sunrise over the Grand Canyon on our first full day in the US on that trip back in 2006 so our time clocks were ‘out’ too big time… So majestic were those sights and as you say, unworldly, but SO worthwhile. Is South rim or North rim your favourite? And finally, our son is Bryan, too…. 🙂

      Hi Peter,
Nice to hear from you. Sunset over the Grand Canyon is memorable, especially the effect of changing light on the rock formations. I’ve visited the South Rim a number of times, but have never made it to the North Rim (yet!).

    Hi Karl,

That’s a once in lifetime photo for sure. Amazing picture of the grand canyon in the middle. Hard to believe your kids are grown. A great family memory.

Nice to hear from you, Dominique! The photo is not technically the greatest, but I’m very sentimental about it.

      Hope you are doing well!
