“Pic of the Week”. December 7, 2012. Grand Palace, Bangkok, Thailand.

The most popular tourist destination in Bangkok is the Grand Palace, a complex that houses (as one of many residences) the beloved Thai Royal family.  It’s also home to some government offices.  During the late 18th century the Thai capitol moved south from Ayutthaya to Bangkok because the former city had fallen to military defeat.  The king at that time began building this palace complex on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, so parts of it are over 200 years old.  The palace grounds are ornate and contain dozens of statues such as those seen in this image.  The golden figure in the foreground is a Kinnorn, a mythical half-man, half-bird.   I’m not sure of the meaning of the fierce looking figures in the background.

I’ve visited the Grand Palace during most of my layovers and visits to Bangkok (at least 6 times) and always find it beautiful and inspiring.  Strolling around it is a good way to walk off the jet lag.  In a crowded busy city, you can find green spots and islands of tranquility here (although there are always crowds of tourists).
